Curriculum - Computer Technology

Computer Literacy/Construction                Grade 9 - 12, Credit .5

Students in this class explore the four main suites within Microsoft Office.  They start with Microsoft Word and produce multiple documents and explore the program.  The next phase is Microsoft PowerPoint.  The students get to choose a topic of their choice or they create a 15-20 slide presentation on a topic provided.  Grading is based on creativity, neatness, and timeliness of completion.  In Microsoft Publisher the students get to create a fictitious company and create all of the materials to launch the company, i.e. business cards, letterhead, etc.  Lastly, Microsoft Excel provides for an opportunity for the students to create charts, graphs, and spreadsheets utilizing fictitious numbers and statistics regarding the company they created in Publisher.

CAD (Computer Aided Design)                   Grade 10 -11, Credit .5

In the CAD Class, the student learns to design residential structures complete with landscaping and interior amenities.  Throughout the construction project, students take the information they have obtained from manual drawings and apply that to an electronic version blueprint, much like the modern-day architect.  Students get familiar with terms such as "proportion" and "square footage" in an effort to assist the understanding of actual structural limitations.  Expanding the project to include landscaping interior design "sparks" the creativity of the student and magnificent 3-D scale drawings are the final result.

Advanced CAD                                                                        Grade 10 - 12, Credit .5

Advanced CAD is an extension of CAD I. This class focuses on detailing various architectural features such as footings, sills, walls, foundations, doors, and windows. Drawings will be done to different scales. Emphasis will be placed on the student's ability to interpret and understand all architectural symbols. Various types of framing will be examined. The student will be expected to develop floor plans, make changes/renovations subsequent to individual needs.

Portfolio Readiness                                                               Grade 9 - 12, Credit .5

During
a student's Senior year, they are scheduled for a Senior Portfolio class. This three-day a week elective gives students time to work closely with an instructor to compile and create their senior electronic portfolio and presentation. In addition to creating their presentation and uploading assignments to the Rhode Island Electronic Portfolio System (RIEPS) online portfolio, this class also focuses on presentation skills that will be necessary for their final cumulative review and gives students opportunity to work on their final reflective essay.  (Useful links http://portfolio.ri.net)
