Construction Craft Technology
Introduction to Construction (grade 9) 1 credit Students in this course begin to learn line and grade using the laser and grade rod to determine different elevations. The main part of this course will tie academics with construction. The project for the 10th grade is building a scale model of a home of their choice. Students are in teams of three or four. They will learn to read and use both a standard and architectural scale ruler. They will be taught to estimate square footage and calculate volume of concrete needed for the foundations and floors of their homes always being mindful of safety and their role as a member of a working team. Students will also be introduced to cutting torches. They will learn proper set up and break down of torches, how to cut metal, and cutting safety. Construction Engineering (grade 11) 1 credit Students in this course take the lessons that were learned in grade 10 Construction Math Application and use them in a more "hands-on" approach. The curriculum revolves around the building of a forty foot concrete bridge. Construction math, line and grade, excavation, soil compaction, concrete forms, concrete placement, cutting torches, demolition, and construction safety are the focus of this project. Students are graded on classroom work, "hands-on" projects, and reliable classroom attendance.
Construction Work Experience (grade 12) 3 credits In the senior construction course students study OSHA, concrete work and pipe work. This course prepares students to work in the construction field. As part of this program, students participate in "hands-on" work study. An example would be off-site work at St. Ann's cemetary in Cranston.
