Cranston Alternate Education Programs
Curriculum - Mathematics

Algebra 1                                                           Grade 9, Credit 1.0

This course helps students understand patterns, relations, and functions. Students will represent and analyze mathematical situations and structures using algebraic symbols. Students will use mathematical models to represent and understand quantitative relationships. Students will build new mathematical knowledge through problem solving. Students will apply and adapt a variety of appropriate strategies to solve problems. Writing, reading, and listening skills will be emphasized.

Math Standards I                                               Grade 9, Credit .5

This course uses a standards-based approach to further develop and strengthen the Math skills that students will need to be successful in Algebra I and Physics First. This is a student-centered, personalized class that applies and explicates the material being taught in Algebra I while providing a foundation for problem solving across the disciplines. Students will apply their knowledge through course assignments that include writing, deomonstrating and projects.

Geometry
Grade 10, Credit 1.0

Students in this course will identify geometric forms and shapes and their properties.  Students will calculate perimeter and area for triangles and quadrilaterals.  Students will identify and/or verify properties of geometric figures using the coordinate plane and concepts from algebra.  Students will construct and/or draw and/or validate properties of geometric figures using appropriate tools and technology.  Writing, reading and listening skills will be emphasized.

Math Standards II                                              Grade 10, Credit .5

This course uses a standards-based approach to further develop and strengthen the Math skills that students will need to be successful in Geometry, Earth/Space/Chemistry, and Construction Math Applications. This is a student-centered, personalized class that applies and explicates the material being taught in Geometry while providing a foundation for problem solving across the disciplines. Students will apply their knowledge through course assignments that include writing, demonstrating and projects.

Algebra 2                                                          Grade 11, Credit 1.0

This course is a continuation of Algebra I for students desiring or needing further understanding and skill in algebraic computation. Topics included in this course are postulates of real numbers, extension of the law of exponents, factoring polynomials, solving linear and quadratic equations and systems in two and three unknowns, inequalities, simplification of rational expressions, functions - linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, conics at origin, and sequences. Students will apply their knowledge through course assisgnments that include writing and demonstration projects.

Integrated Math                                                Grade 10, Credit 1.0

This course prepares students who need additional work in the fundamentals of arthmetic for Algebra 1. It involves computational practice, applications, and some basic algebra and geometry concepts. Students in this course are expected to take Algebra 1 in the following grade. Students will build on their knowledge of the real number system and will expand their knowledge into more mathematically sophisticated and abstract areas. They will have an opportunity to explore and create algebraic and geometric patterns and use mathematical modeling as a problem-solving tool. Students will be encouraged to reason and communicate about skills and ideas in math that lead to conceptual and computational development. They will begin to have solid foundation for udnerstanding and exploring Algebra and Geometry concepts. Students will apply their knowledge through course assignments that include writing, demonstrating, and projects.

Business Math (Consumer Math)                              Grade 11-12, Credit 1.0

Students in this course study many topics that will prepare them for maintaining their personal finances.  Topics such as checking accounts, savings accounts, credit card usage, tax preparation, budgeting, insurance, and accounts receivable and payable are addressed.  Students maintain educational math journals that will prepare them to solve math problems using a problem-based learning approach.  Literacy is stressed throughout the course.
